The DStv Explora will receive a selection of updates next week.

DStv customers with MultiChoice's flagship decoder, the Explora, can expect a series of updates to go live next week, with more to follow as MultiChoice focuses on diversifying its Internet offering.

Nyiko Shiburi, consumer devices GM, says Naspers-owned MultiChoice is basing its business on the Explora, and there will be constant enhancements going forward.

Talking about the upcoming changes after next week's updates, Shiburi says: "At the moment, we are working on self-help with the system, trying to eliminate the need for customers to call us."

Next week's updates centre around content discovery and integration across platforms.

Shiburi says the updates will happen automatically via satellite, and take place at some point next week late in the evening. He notes it could take two to three days for all decoders to be updated.

Shiburi says after the initial Explora launch, there was a lot of content available for the customer to choose from on Catch-Up Plus, the push video-on-demand service - which is available via the Internet - and content that is playing live.

To make it easier for customers to find what they are looking for, one of the updates will be an instant search function that searches both the current channels and the content available on Catch-Up Plus.

"Our aim was to make it easier for the customer and also to create a seamless experience," says Shiburi.

Another update will allow users to watch content while it is being downloaded. "Previously you could only watch content once it had been downloaded and only in the sequence you downloaded it. With the new update, you will be able to pause the show being downloaded and choose another in the queue to download and watch." Shiburi says this gives customers more flexibility.
