MTN has warned that an upgrade to its deep packet inspection (DPI) system, currently underway, may disrupt certain customers' services.

The operator released a statement this morning, in which it explains that ongoing upgrades "might result in intermittent service din the areas where upgrades have not taken place".

MTN did not specify which areas had yet to see DPI upgrades.

"We wish to apologise profusely for any inconvenience caused. The upgrades are expected to be completed by the beginning of May."

Network investment

At the same time, MTN reiterated its recent announcement of a R10 billion investment in capital expenditure earmarked for 2015. "This massive investment has been allocated for infrastructure upgrades across the country in order to optimise the network and provide better service and connectivity to our customers."

Network upgrades have already begun "at various regions across the country" and involve the construction of new base stations and the refarming of existing voice spectrum for the deployment of new generation technologies like LTE.

The company says in KZN, Northern Province, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Centurion outside of Pretoria were successfully completed this week.

"This optimisation exercise is aimed at ensuring that the network is of an acceptable standard and is capable of satisfying their needs of the customers."

The operator notes that, in the event of a power failure, MTN base stations are powered by batteries or generators. "Part of our investment is to ensure that all base stations are capacitated with the necessary batteries and generators."
