Undersea cable operator Seacom is carrying out maintenance on fibre cables in Egypt, expected to continue until later tonight, which could affect local Internet speed.

Internet service provider MWEB has warned the maintenance work could continue until 10pm.

"We have secured capacity on an alternative route for the duration, [but] this does mean we are operating at reduced international capacity for the day," MWEB warned on its Facebook page.

"We have prioritised traffic accordingly; however, you may still experience some reduced speeds or increased latency. We apologise for the inconvenience and will let you know as soon as full service is restored."

Seacom operates a 17 000km undersea fibre cable network, connecting to various countries along Africa's east coast, including Kenya and Mtunzini, in SA. The network also connects to links in Europe and parts of North Africa.
