A computer room with 20 laptops has been established at Radipeu Primary Farm School in Vanderbijlpark, as part of the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services' Schools Connectivity Project.

The Schools Connectivity Project aims to ensure all educational institutions in the country are connected. The project started after the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Deputy telecoms and postal services minister Hlengiwe Mkhize said the launch coincided with International World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on Sunday.

Yesterday marked the 150th anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union.

Sentech, a state-owned enterprise, donated the laptops, wireless access network equipment, an air-conditioner, and a mobile trolley for the laptops to the school.

Speaking during the event, Mkhize told the pupils that any road to success starts with education, and encouraged them to aspire to become scientists, engineers and leaders in the telecommunications sector.

The school is a no fee (section 21) public school with nearly 300 registered learners from Grade R to Grade 7.
