ISACA SA introduces scholarship programme

Johannesburg, 27 May 2015

ISACA has more than 115 000 constituents across 180 countries. ISACA assists businesses and IT leaders to build trust in, and derive value from, information and information systems. ISACA was established in 1969, and, over the past 45 years, has developed into a trusted source of knowledge, standards, networking, and career development for information systems audit, assurance, security, risk, privacy, and governance professionals. The South Africa Chapter of ISACA has grown to close on 2 500 members.

ISACA SA has a board complement of 15 directors/coordinators. Kenneth Palliam is the current Academic Relations Coordinator for the chapter and his primary focus is to act as the liaison with academia and student members towards promoting awareness of, interest in, and the study of, ISACA certifications. This is achieved through assisting members of academia with their registration as academic advocates at tertiary institutions, providing guidance relating to the establishment of ISACA student groups at South African universities, the implementation of a Student Member Subsidisation Programme, and the co-ordination of the Academic Research Assistance Process developed to assist students conducting research.

ISACA SA's Academic Relations also manages the recently introduced ISACA SA Scholarships, which is awarded to post-graduate students to recognise and reward their achievements in the fields of information systems (IS), IS governance, IS audit, IS risk, IS compliance, and information security.

ISACA SA Scholarships are funded through the association's reserves, which are drawn from membership fees and third-party sponsorships. Scholarship funds are to be applied for tuition fees and books. Monies are paid directly to the university/institution. The scholarship selection process was performed by an adjudication panel, which reviewed all applications and supporting documents.

Applications were considered on merit. The closing date for applications for the 2015 academic year was 31 January 2015. Applications for 2016 will open later in the year.

Three scholarships of R30 000 each were awarded to the following applicants:

* Bonga Mbuli, who recently completed his Bachelor in Technology (BTECH) in Internal Auditing at the Vaal University of Technology. Mbuli will be pursuing a BCom Hons degree at the University of Pretoria, majoring in internal audit and IS audit. Mbuli was one of the founders and the past president of the Vaal University of Technology's (VUT) Internal Auditing Student Association. He was also the Chairperson of the ISACA Student Group of VUT, which was the first ISACA Student Group in South Africa.

* Ignus van Zyl, who is pursuing his MSc studies at Rhodes University and aspires to be a chief information officer or chief technology officer.

* Sonny Ako-Nai, who is a post-graduate student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His field of study is within corporate governance, and he is seeking to bridge the gap between technical IT/IS governance and corporate governance. Ako-Nai is also an ISACA academic advocate.

ISACA SA wishes its 2015 scholarship award recipients all the best with their studies and career aspirations. If you would like more information, please visit the Academic Relations page on the ISACA Web site or contact the individuals listed below.
