Apple is voluntarily recalling Beats Pill XL speakers and will refund customers who have brought the products.

In a statement, the device maker says the recall has been issued because it has determined that, in rare cases, the battery in the Beats Pill XL may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. The recall does not affect any other Beats or Apple products.

Apple is asking customers to stop using their Beats Pill XL speakers "because customer safety is the company's top priority". Customers who purchased a Beats Pill XL speaker should visit a Web site for details about how to return their product to Apple, and how to receive an Apple Store credit or electronic payment.

The Beats Pill XL can be identified by the Beats "b" logo on the speaker grille and the words "beats pill XL" on the handle. The product is sold in five colours: black, metallic sky, pink, titanium and white.

The Beats Pill XL was introduced by Beats by Dre in November 2013. Apple acquired Beats in 2014 for $3 billion.

The deal was Apple's largest acquisition in decades, announced in May 2014. It landed the iPhone maker a fast-growing music subscription business, executives like Jimmy Iovine with strong ties to the recording industry, and a line of premium headphones.

In 2013, Apple was in the spotlight after 23-year-old Ma Ailun - a former flight attendant - was electrocuted to death when she answered a call on her iPhone 5, while it was charging. China is a known grey product market.
