Instagram takes on Twitter

Instagram is to step up competition against Twitter by introducing private messages that allow users to send to groups of up to 15 people.

Kevin Systrom, chief executive of Instagram, described the new Instagram Direct feature as "a simple way to send photos and videos to your friends".

New dictionary lingo

Around 500 new words and phrases have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary in the tome's quarterly update, including several that provide an insight into 21st century hobbies, such as 'sexting', 'photobombing', 'vaping' and 'crowdfunding'.

Others included in the latest version of the dictionary are the words 'meh' and 'twerk', as well as more complex ones like 'Enviropig' - the trademark for a genetically modified line of Yorkshire pigs with enhanced digestive capabilities.

Samsung blocks MS

Samsung has been accused of disabling Microsoft's software in preference for its own, leaving computers insecure.

Microsoft technical expert Patrick Barker said he had found Samsung software downloading and running a file called Disable_Windowsupdate.exe, while helping a user with a computer problem.

Tumblr TV

Following the rollout of Tumblr's GIF search engine earlier this month, the blogging platform has unveiled another feature aimed at helping users discover and share GIFs - Tumblr TV.

The addition is a combination of a search and viewing feature for GIFs, which helps users find the animated images housed on Tumblr and then view them in a full-screen mode.

Facebook ban

Facebook has been accused of putting users at risk "of rape and death threats" by a journalist who was banned from the social networking site for using a pseudonym.

Laurie Penny, a contributing editor at the weekly political magazine the New Statesman, who also writes for the Guardian, said she had been kicked off Facebook for using a fake name to avoid being trolled.

Safety Truck

Samsung is introducing the "Safety Truck," which aims to make driving near semis much more manageable for others on the road.

The truck features a built-in wireless camera on the front, which broadcasts a live feed of what is in front of the vehicle directly to four monitors on the back of the truck to drivers behind it.
