The programme will encourage local content providers, business and application providers to reach both local and global consumers, says Huawei's Mac Taylor.

Huawei unveiled Africa's first Digital inCloud Eastern and Southern Africa regional hosting centre at the VAS Africa summit in Sandton yesterday.

Digital inCloud is a digital service aggregation and distribution platform, which aims to help telecoms to accelerate digital service transformation.

The centre will introduce more digital services to Africa through the cooperation of operators and local and global partners, said Mac Taylor, chief business consultant at Huawei digital services product line.

The company is partnering with MTN in SA and Safaricom in Kenya. The local service partners include Globaltom, GM Gaming, and the GMSA. In addition three more services will be launched in SA in July.

According to Felix Tang, director of Huawei Eastern and Southern Region Carrier Software Department at Huawei, Digital inCloud solution will facilitate the ease of distribution and trade between consumer, carriers, and partners of digital products and services.

This facilitation will be achieved through improved content aggregation, and better management of local and global digital content, he said.

This localised business operation allows African carriers and partners to develop digital products and services enabling them to compete globally, he added.

Huawei's ability to work with local partners is important because there is a great deal of talent in every geographical domain that often does not have a gateway or portal to the world, said Taylor.

"Through this programme we will encourage local content providers, business and application providers to not only reach consumers in their local markets through operators but a global audience as well."

Global partner agreements are the best channels through which to distribute local digital content globally, said Tang.

The focus areas include digital music, mobile game, video, open API, traffic monetisation, business-to-business cloud, and machine-to-machine.

With the launch of Digital inCloud Eastern and Southern Africa regional centre, Huawei's global distribution network nodes increased from eight to nine.
