South African consumers will be able to get the Huawei P8 smartphone today, from selected stores. The company's flagship device was launched across Africa at an event in Johannesburg last night.

"The goal of the Huawei P8 is to become the most user-friendly smartphone for consumers globally," said Charlene Munilall, GM of Huawei Consumer Business Group SA.

The smartphone is aimed at the fashion-conscious, "visually stimulated" modern user. It will be available in all South African stores and through all network operators from next week.

The device will be available in either "Mystic Champagne" or "Titanium Grey".

The P8 has a 5.2-inch full HD display, and the 6.4mm thick metal unibody is flat on both sides with no protruding camera.

Huawei claims the battery life will offer up to 24 hours of standby power when the phone signals there is only a battery life of 10% remaining.

The P8 is available with 16GB on-board memory, with 64GB coming soon. There is a micro SD slot for up to 128GB extra memory. The smartphone also has dual SIM card capabilities.

The recommended retail price starts at R7 999 but the P8 is also available from Orange for R6 695.

Huawei will launch a larger phablet later this year: the P8 Max.
