The data centre industry continues to be affected by the exponential growth of data and the recognition that there is enormous value in that data, says Gareth Mellon, team leader for ICT at Frost & Sullivan Africa.

Mellon is a keynote speaker at the Data Centres: The Next Frontier 2015 conference, to be held at The Forum, in Bryanston, on 21 and 22 July.

Africa is still in the growth phase of data uptake, so the industry expansion will be relevant for a number of years. "In this respect, South Africa's data centre industry is still responding to the market growth potential and also looking to take advantage of potential opportunities on the rest of the continent."

Mellon says other trends in the data centre industry are relevant to the management of facilities. These include areas such as energy usage, the impact of cloud-based services, and increasing customer expectations and demands. The impact on SA's providers is affected both by local power concerns as well as specific customer needs (eg, build time, availability, monitoring).

In his keynote session on "African mega trends and their impact on the data centre market", Mellon will demonstrate how mega trends are helpful for identifying potential future opportunities, especially given the range of industries starting to recognise the value contained in the data they collect.

"Examples that are particularly relevant to Africa would include banking and insurance, telecommunications and retail, to name a few," concludes Mellon.
