Angry Birds 2 was downloaded over 10 million times this weekend but the game has been met with mixed reviews, mostly because its maker, Rovio, has taken a new 'freemium' approach.

The original Angry Birds was launched in December 2009 as a premium app that players would pay to download. The game was downloaded more than three billion times across the world.

Angry Birds 2 is "free-to-play", but gamers on social media are complaining the game is filled with micro-transactions.

This is because Rovio has adopted a business model made famous by Candy Crush Saga, whereby a certain number of lives are given to each player. Once those lives are finished, the player has to either wait half an hour or pay money to continue playing.

Pocket Game editor Mark Brown tweeted: "Ugh, Angry Birds 2. When a developer only makes money when you fail, how can you possibly trust that the challenge is fair?"

The game still retains the original slingshot format; however, new characters have been introduced and the graphics redone.

"Design technology has evolved dramatically since the original game launched in 2009," says Rovio co-founder Niklas Hed. "With Angry Birds 2 we wanted to bring a level of expressive depth and detail seen previously only in a console game or animated series - and create a new game that kids and adults alike won't be able to put down."

This morning, Angry Birds 2 was the most downloaded free iOS app; however, it was at 36 on the top grossing list.
