MTN app awards finalists named

This year, the MTN Business App of the Year Awards focus on genre-related categories, instead of platform categories.

Finalists for the MTN Business App of the Year Awards 2015 have been announced and winners will be announced on Thursday evening.

This year, the awards focused on genre-related categories, instead of platform categories.

The app competition is in its fourth year. In previous years, developers could only enter apps that were developed in a certain time frame. This year, the timeframe was opened, due to the new categories, and any app was eligible for entry.

The following apps are finalists:

* WumDrop - An app that allows users to get anything picked up or dropped off at anytime and anywhere.
* Vula Mobile - An app that connects general healthcare workers directly with specialists.
* SearchWorks - An information portal for users to search in various industries, such as Deeds Office, Credit Bureaus, CIPC and vehicle information from one secure platform.
* BoardView Professional - An app for scheduling, managing and conducting paperless meetings.
* HelloCrowd - An event manager app.
* humbleTill - A retail point-of-sale app.
* DSTV Now - An app for DSTV subscribers.
* EskomSePush - A load-shedding schedule app.
* Sasol Young Explorer Mammals - An app that introduces young nature enthusiasts to the wild mammals of southern Africa.
* MyToyota - An app that gives Toyota users all information and services related to their vehicle.
* VCpay - An online payment app.
* Thumbtom - A lock screen replacement app that rewards users for unlocking their phones.
* Standard Online Share Trading - An app that allows users to conduct real-time trading in shares, derivatives and other investment instruments.
* Tuluntulu - A video streaming app.
* PriceCheck - A price comparison app.
* M4JAM - An app that allows users to perform 'micro-tasks' for money.
* MyNewStart - An educational quiz app.
* Voonja - A citizen journalism app.
* CPUT Mobile - The Cape Peninsula University of Technology app for students and staff.
* TouchToLearn - An an end-to-end e-learning solution app.
* AirSME - An app that helps SMEs reduce the cost of securing new contracts.

The winners will be announced on Thursday, 13 August, at Urban Tree in Sandton. Judges will take product solution and design, creativity, usability and market impact, and long-term sustainability of the app into consideration when deciding on the winners.

Last year, LIVE Inspect, an insurance claim app that allows insurers to automatically assess damage to vehicles, claimed the overall winner's spot. Mobile payments app Zapper won the consumers' choice award and best Microsoft app.

In 2013, mobile payment app SnapScan was the overall winner. The app was later acquired by Standard Bank and is now used extensively countrywide. Other winners that year included the iOS DStv app, the Nedbank app suite and PriceCheck Mobile. PriceCheck went on to win International App of the Year in the US.

In 2012, the first year of the awards, the FNB Banking app was the overall winner, with the Discovery Health ID app receiving the award for the best iOS enterprise app.
