Absa Bank has added an Apple Watch app to its iOS banking offering.

The app allows users to view their account balances in a graphic meter gauge view. Users will also be able to pair their mobile device and Apple Watch to set account balance indicators.

No other features have been announced yet.

In the announcement video, Cape Town-based artist Lorraine Loots - famous for her miniature water colour paintings - paints a small Apple Watch with the tag line: "The smallest thing in banking. 2015".

Absa said on its Facebook page that to set up the app, the registration process must begin on the user's iPhone under 'Watch Management' in settings. This will "make sure this process is as safe and secure as possible", says the site.

In June, Standard Bank announced it was testing its own Apple Watch app that will be available to the general public by the end of September.

The Apple Watch has not yet been officially launched in South Africa, but is being sold via online stores as a grey import.
