The CEO Sleepout held in Sandton in June broke the record for the largest sum raised by a single South African charity event.

Auditors BDO SA have revealed that R26 054 869 was raised at the CEO SleepOut held earlier this year in Sandton.

It is the largest sum raised by a single South African charity event.

In addition, it is the largest amount of funds raised for any inaugural CEO SleepOut event. Sydney hosted their 10th event this year and Johannesburg raised more than Sydney did in its first year.

Ali Gregg, founder of The Philanthropic, which brought the CEO SleepOut concept from Australia, has confirmed that the monies raised by the 702 Sun International event held on 18 June are being held by Girls & Boys Town.

247 CEOs and business leaders participated in the event. Each participant was required to raise R100 000 to be part of the experience, which saw them sleeping on the streets with a sleeping bag and cardboard floor-covering.

The event originated in 2006 in Sydney, Australia, by local business leader Bernard Fehon. In 2012 Gregg engaged Fehon to extend the concept to South Africa.

Gregg has announced that The Philanthropic will host nationwide SleepOuts next year in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
