Oger Telecom has had multiple offers to buy its controlling stake in Cell C. This is according to a Business Day report, which quoted Oger Telecom's chief legal officer and deputy CEO Mazen Abou Chakra saying both international and South African companies had shown interest.

"Six groups approached us with interest in acquiring our stake in Cell C," according to Chakra, who says no decision has yet been taken.

Chakra told Business Day Oger Telecom is very happy with the good performance of Cell C over the past 12 to 18 months and "remains fully committed to the business" until a decision to sell its stake is taken.

The Dubai-based company owns 75% of Cell C, and back in March, Reuters quoted Oger chairman Mohammed Hariri saying if it got a good price, it would sell the controlling stake.

Earlier this month, Telkom confirmed to ITWeb that at the right price it would certainly consider buying Cell C. Since then, the Competition Commission has blocked a proposed bilateral roaming deal between Telkom and MTN, which could make a stake in Cell C even more attractive to Telkom.

Cell C previously told ITWeb that "the process is ongoing" and its principal shareholder was "considering all its options".
