So far, 11 300 organisations and individuals have registered the city domain names of three major metros in SA.

Organisations looking to register the domain names that reflect the three major metropolitan cities, dotJoburg (.joburg), dotCapeTown (.capetown) and dotDurban (.durban), will only pay R75.

According to Domains.co.za, before the price drop, it cost R275 to register city domain names.

Wayne Diamond, MD of Domains.co.za, says take-up by local and overseas individuals and organisations interested in securing a slice of valuable South African Web real estate has resulted in economies of scale.

"As a spring promotion, Domains.co.za, in conjunction with the registry, is able to offer dotJoburg, dotCape Town and dotDurban at the same price as domains within the 20-year-old co.za domain name space," says Diamond.

He adds: "We're hopeful that reduced dotJoburg, dotCapeTown and dotDurban pricing will help take the number of registered SA city domain names right up and over the 20 000 milestone."

There are currently 11 300 domains registered that reflect the names of the metropolitan cities, compared to over one million co.za domains.
