Telkom plans to roll-out fibre to a million homes by 2018. Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko outlined the plan while speaking at the Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC) in Hermanus, Western Cape, today.

Telkom's ambitions fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) expansion plans have been in progress since June last year, when it announced it would bring FTTH to 23 suburbs.

Maseko says that as of the end of August, Telkom had connected 38 000 homes to its FTTH network. This will expand to 70 000 by December.

By March next year, 150 000 homes will have FTTH and this will grow to half a million by the end of 2016.

"By March 2018, we will have reached one million homes that will have fibre-to-the-home," said Maseko.

In July, Telkom announced price cuts to a range of copper and fibre data products, including FTTH, with reductions of over 15%.
