The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) says just over 5 000 of the potholes it fixed in the last financial year were reported via its mobile app, Fix & Find.

The JRA launched the Find & Fix mobile app in May last year, as a way to improve feedback from the public.

The app captures the exact global positioning co-ordinates of problems such as potholes, allowing motorists to add photos and descriptions to their query for the JRA to effectively fix the issue. App users can also report faulty traffic lights, blocked storm water drains, and missing or damaged manhole covers.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peter-Scheepers says there are about 13 000 app users.

"We are very pleased with the proactive community engagement with JRA via the app to identify road-related issues.

"The majority of issues that are reported via the app are traffic signals as well as potholes that require attention, and this quick reporting has meant JRA is able to improve its turnaround times. Most of the feedback related to the mobile app is good to excellent," Peter-Scheepers notes.

According to the JRA, between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014, a total of 288 074 potholes were fixed. The agency says pro-active road maintenance between 1 July and 31 July 2015 saw 4 126 repairs.

The Find & Fix app runs on Android, Windows and iOS smartphones.
