Johannesburg suburb Braamfontein has become the latest public area to offer its residents free WiFi access.

The City of Joburg announced Braamfontein will have 100% free WiFi, with each resident getting an Internet daily cap of 300MB per device. The city has not stated if access to the free WiFi will require login details.

According to the city, giving residents access to free WiFi is part of the Braamfontein Wireless Mesh project, which will see 1 000 WiFi hotspots completed by year-end.

Entrepreneurs, students, housewives, employees and visitors alike can now conduct their business on the go, check e-mails and updates on their way to the office or campus, says Parks Tau, executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

"We see this is as a very transformative initiative that will turbo-charge Joburg's digital economy. We have set ourselves an ambitious target to get this going but it is really just the beginning. Amazing things are coming and the Smart City is here. This is our vision for a world-class African city," says Tau.

The city also plans to provide free WiFi access to other areas around Johannesburg, such as Zandspriut, Diepsloot, Orange Farm, Ivory Park, Pennyville, Lenasia and Ziberfontein.
