CIO Survey 2015 results released at Brainstorm CIO Banquet

Johannesburg, 06 Oct 2015

The results of the ITWeb Brainstorm CIO Survey 2015 were revealed at a prestigious banquet held on the 1st of October 2015, at Summer Place in Hyde Park.

CIOs, from 50 of the top companies in South Africa, emerged from their chauffeured chariots to a red carpet welcome. As sundowners were enjoyed, alongside the serene Summer Place fountain, the anticipation of the results of the survey could be felt in the air.

Debra Patta, the MC for the evening, kicked off by introducing Tshifhiwa Ramuthaga, CIO of the Financial Services Board, who discussed 3 broad categories of topics, including IT delivery, the shadow IT 'monster' and the continual merger and acquisition challenge. In Ramuthaga's opening line, she said "It's critical that we run with two minds. Gartner calls it bimodal IT; I call it schizophrenia. It means the CIO is schizophrenic," which captured the interest of the room full of CIOs immediately.

Moving onto shadow IT, which is a term used to describe IT systems and solutions built and used inside organisation without explicit organisational approval, Ramuthaga intimated that this phenomenon would grow, with or without help from the CIO, but that the challenge would be to act differently towards shadow IT and embrace it. "The monster is called shadow IT. In some companies, people will be running servers from their desks", Ramuthaga quipped.

Len de Villiers, Telkom CIO, highlighted the increased pressure felt, and the changing role, of the CIO.

ITWeb's analysis editor and content strategist, Jon Tullet, presented the Brainstorm CIO Survey 2015 results. This year's survey showed a marked shift in CIO perceptions, and the data indicated a definite growth in the strategic roles CIOs are playing, with a strong focus on business alignment, company-wide productivity and efficiency, and new business development.

The band, Denim, who are widely regarded as one of SA's top acts, entertained the banquet with their original R&B music and cover renditions of some good old favourite classics, rounding off the evening with festive dancing inside, and networking outside.

A great evening was had by all in attendance and ITWeb Brainstorm would like to thank its main sponsor, Telkom, as well as its table sponsors*, for their support.
