Trend Micro has appointed Darryn O'Brien as the new country manager for Southern Africa.

He joins the company from his former position as an enterprise team leader for Symantec. He replaces Gregory Anderson who held the position from September 2012.

O'Brien says his main focus will be to increase product sales within SA while setting up the structure for the Southern Africa region.

"My longer term plans are to increase Trend Micro's visibility within SA and ensure continued growth in line with Trend Micro internationally". Also, he plans to lead the company in its efforts to expand the company's growth into Southern Africa.

Having worked in the IT security market for over a decade, O'Brien has a wealth of knowledge about IT security threats and players and how they are constantly changing, says Trend Micro.

This will enable him to help customers to effectively protect themselves against security threats, by keeping them up to date on modern threats and providing them the solutions from Trend Micro to best suit their business needs, it adds.

South African companies have largely been left alone by international hackers but recent data has shown that this is no longer the case, says O'Brien.

"Malware, advanced malware and now advanced persistent threats are growing yearly so it's no longer a question of 'if' you are going to be hacked but rather 'when'."

O'Brien points out organisations in SA today have more security point solutions than 10 years ago but they are still being breached.

The challenge organisations have is to make sense of all these point solutions that are feeding back security information, he adds.

"We are living in an exciting technological age, but with that comes the responsibility - especially as an enterprise - to protect our data and our customer's or partner's data from falling into the hands of cybercriminals."

Threats evolve as quickly as IT does and so it is vital that companies are proactive and not reactive when it comes to IT security, adds O'Brien.

O'Brien has previously managed teams responsible for top enterprise accounts within South Africa and has extensive experience in the management and maintenance of business relationships with partners and customers, says Trend Micro.

He matriculated in 1995 and then studied Network Engineering at the Computer Training Institute. O'Brien worked at Altiris (acquired by Symantec in 2008) for seven years, Symantec for almost six years.
