Most businesses have unused bandwidth that could be used to provide live streaming and monitoring of premises, says Vox Telecom.

Privately held telecommunications provider Vox Telecom yesterday unveiled a remote monitoring centre in Johannesburg.

The Vox Telecom Nerve Centre provides both the security company and the customer with an additional line of defence, said Dederick Venter, executive head of outsourced technology at Vox Telecom.

This adds to the company's current list of services, including fibre infrastructure services, alternative voice solutions, data access and Internet service provider services, cloud, PBX and video conferencing services, telephony management systems, faxing and text messaging applications.

The solutions include automation of access control after hours, number plate recognition and comprehensive incident reporting, says Vox Telecom.

An additional benefit of the Vox Telecom monitoring offer, is the ability to record events and the provision of extensive event reporting that can be used to successfully prosecute criminals, it adds.

Quality video footage serves as admissible, reliable and valuable testimony, and delivers irrefutable identification of perpetrators, notes Vox Telecom.

According to Venter, most businesses have unused bandwidth, especially after hours that could be used to provide live streaming and monitoring of premises, to a dedicated control room.

"A lot of security companies don't have control rooms and are not in control of the data link. We saw an opportunity to use our infrastructure and our customer's unused bandwidth to help them monitor their premises after hours in the control room and support them with security issues."

This coupled with Vox Telecom class management software, has meant developing a solution that offers its customers an impartial monitoring solution, and a second level of peace of mind, noted Venter.

Access to the Vox Telecom Nerve Centre is not just restricted to existing customers, but can be utilised by any business that has a reliable data link installed, he said.

"The benefit of utilising both data and monitoring services from us, is that the integration between our surveillance, and voice monitoring facilities affords us full visibility. When data links go down, we have the ability to send an early alert to the customer, warning of a potential intrusion risk."

According to Venter, this service does not compete with security and guarding solutions, but rather supports and enhances their on-the-ground capabilities.

"The control room is available as a disaster recovery and redundant service facility for the broader security industry," concludes Venter.
