Johannesburg suburbs Emmarentia, Forest Town, Parktown, Gallo Manor and Melrose will soon join Vumatel's fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network of 'fibrehoods'.

A Vumatel statement notes construction of the fibre network will begin in Emmarentia next month, while installation in the other four suburbs will start in the first quarter of next year.

Brian Seligmann, head of Gallo Manor FTTH Project, says: "Gallo Manor has to date provided one of the most stringent discovery processes encountered by Vumatel with regards to broadband connectivity within a suburb.

"Vumatel was selected based on their having achieved the highest scores across all criteria, with a really strong showing on track record and reputation," states Seligmann.

CEO Niel Schoeman adds: "This is an extremely exciting period for the company, and we continue to focus on our commitment to deploy affordable, high-speed FTTH to 100 000 homes by the end of 2016."

Vumatel's FTTH network is live and available in Parkhurst, Parktown North, Greenside, Killarney, Riviera and Saxonwold, and Parkwood.

In addition, Vumatel is also on-site building fibrehoods in Blairgowrie, Victory Park, Linden, Hurlingham, Glenadrienne, Willowild, Riepen Park and Bryanston.

Last year, Vumatel said it had identified 42 suburbs in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The company wants to roll out fibre to 200 000 houses over the next three to four years.
