Following the commercial launch of the LampSite indoor coverage solution, Huawei Technologies has announced it has partnered with Cell C, to provide the same network connectivity for malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Huawei's LampSite indoor solution is the first commercial network to be deployed in South Africa and aims to improve indoor coverage and capacity.

The LampSites are small cell base stations that can be deployed throughout a mall and provide high speeds of 3G and 4G Internet experience.

Demand for a high-speed, high-volume data experience is growing as more and more subscribers are introduced to the possibilities of using LTE TDD mobile networks with their smartphones.

Speaking at a Huawei briefing at AfricaCom 2015 in Cape Town, an official said the LampSite is small but has big capacity and provides better Internet speeds.

The Huawei official did not reveal where Cell C would deploy the LampSite solutions.

"Huawei has worked with Cell C to provide better experience for the end-user especially for indoor coverage in South Africa," said the official. "Cell C is focusing on the experience of the end-users."

She added: "In Johannesburg, we have already deployed commercial LampSite solutions at three shopping malls, and for Cape Town this will be the first. By the end of this year or early next year, Cell C will work with us and provide our indoor network solution in the shopping malls, big offices and some restaurants."

Last week, Huawei also announced its partnership with MTN to launch the LampSite indoor coverage solution at Lakeside Mall, east of Johannesburg.

Commenting on the partnership, Edric Chu, director of Huawei South Africa, said: "In order to create a ubiquitous high-quality mobile broadband network, operators need to enhance the user experience and obtain competitive service differentiation. The LampSite solution helps operators to achieve data management services by expanding digital services and leading indoor digitised industry advancement."
