Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he will take two months of paternity leave.

The social network announced this morning it will extend its paternal leave policy to all Facebook employees worldwide.

Staff will now be able to take up to four months paid leave, within the year after their child is born.

This policy already exists for Facebook employees in the US.

"We are extending our international 'paid baby leave' policy (known as 'parental leave' in the US) for all Facebook employees outside the US starting 1 January," says Lori Goler, Facebook VP of people.

"In addition to the four months of existing maternity leave available to all employees, this new policy will expand the leave new dads can take over the course of a year from four weeks to four months."

Goler says all new parents in all Facebook offices worldwide, including those who had or adopted a baby in 2015 and were Facebook employees at the time, will be eligible for this extended benefit.

"This expanded benefit will not alter the four months of existing maternity leave available to all employees. It also applies to both parents, including people in same-sex relationships, whether they are the primary caregiver or not."

Goler says the company believes increasing the amount of paid baby leave afforded to all employees after the birth or adoption of a child is the right thing to do.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that he would take two months of paternity leave after his daughter's birth.

The US does not have laws mandating leave.
