The MTN SA Foundation will donate computer labs to the value of R2.6 million to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).
The GDE announced renovated computer labs furnished with 20 computers, and an educator's station will be handed over to seven schools in the Sedibeng West district of the Vaal.
The computer labs are also equipped with two servers, a multifunctional printer, an interactive white board, a data projector, a router and data card for connectivity. MTN will provide a data card for connectivity and free Internet connectivity for 24 months, says the department.
"The support from the foundation is a part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring we make a positive difference in the communities we operate in and contribute positively to the development of learners who will contribute to the growth and sustainability of our economy," says Kusile Mtunzi Hairwadzi, GM of MTN SA.
The beneficiary schools include Mqiniswa Primary School, Lebohang High School, Khutlotharo Secondary School, Qhoweng Primary School, Polokong Primary School, Lakeside Secondary School and Poelano Secondary School.
The labs will assist the department in its drive to ensure more learners in Gauteng have access to a wealth of information relating to their curriculum needs through the use of ICT, says the GDE.
Despite the GDE's efforts to provide 21st century tech equipment and bridge the digital divide in education in the province, the department previously admitted its efforts have attracted the attention of thieves.
According to the GDE, although tech equipment is fitted with tracking devices to locate them when they get stolen, this has done little to curb criminals.
"The biggest challenge the department is experiencing with regard to the e-learning and smart devices project is theft," said the department.
