Telkom is offering over 11 000 digital subscriber line (DSL) customers the chance to upgrade to fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in a new trial.

From 2 February, DSL customers within Telkom's fibre footprint will be able to upgrade their copper-based connectivity to the more advanced fibre network.

Telkom says customers will also have the opportunity to test Telkom's 'Boltspeed' 10Mbps and 20Mbps fibre products, free for two months.

"Telkom has the largest fibre network in the country and we want to take this high-performing technology into our customers' homes, businesses and schools," says Telkom consumer MD Attila Vitai.

Vitai says fibre is the next evolution of fixed-line broadband connectivity.

"Not only does fibre offer faster speeds but it is less susceptible to electronic interference, lightning and water damage than the copper network," according to Vitai.

The trial offer means DSL customers ? who are currently on 2Mbps, 4Mbps and 8Mbps DSL products ? can move across to the "more stable and reliable" fibre network.

"During the two-month trial, they are also able to test the 10Mbps and 20Mbps line options and can then make a call at the end of the two months, which package they choose to adopt," says Telkom.

Vitai says Telkom's installation teams are working to secure installations within seven to 10 days from order. Telkom customers will also not be charged an installation fee, as long as a like-for-like installation is possible.

After the two-month trial, customers will be able to upgrade to the 10Mbps or 20Mbps options, or return to their original DSL package.

Telkom aims to roll-out fibre to a million homes by 2018. According to Telkom's latest update for the third quarter ended 31 December, the telecoms operator's FTTH operations have passed 56 000 homes, while fibre-to-the-curb has surpassed 1.25 million homes.
