The Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (REDISA) has introduced a mobile game to promote awareness about waste management, opportunities created by the circular economy, and highlight key environmental matters.

According to a statement, the roleplaying game lets users choose a character that will enter the waste stream industry and realise the value found in waste management.

The purpose of the game is for the character to start from scratch as a micro-collector, and grow his/her wealth by collecting waste. The end goal for the character is to run a waste management empire.

REDISA says it chose the gaming platform to reach a wide audience in an unusual and engaging way.

"Education around the opportunities that exist within the waste sector is vital to change South Africans' mindsets that waste has no value. The game platform was created to invoke a memorable and engaging way to educate the public about what can be done to alleviate a serious environmental problem and, at the same time, for them to see the opportunities to be found in waste," says REDISA director Stacey Davidson.

As part of the Integrated Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan, REDISA has a mandate to educate the public about environmental conservation, which is critical for efficient and effective long-term management of waste.

The REDISA game can be downloaded free on Apple Store, Google Play and the Windows Stores.
