Google has redesigned its 'My Maps' Android app, which was rumoured to be discontinued, to include more customisable features and a step-by-step tutorial.

Not to be confused with the Google Maps app, My Maps lets users create custom maps using Google Maps data. Users can drop pins, add media and descriptions for private or public maps.

The Android Police were the first to notice that the app - which has not been updated for two years - has been completely overhauled and rebuilt from the ground up.

The new version has an updated user interface - which works faster - and an informative welcome guide for new users. The app now lets users add personal descriptions to their own private maps and view photos and videos added to Google Maps. My Maps will also give users directions to saved points and let them access Street View from within the app.

The update is available to all Android users in the Google Play Store. It is not clear yet if, or when, the app will be available in the Apple App Store.
