The latest Xiaomi phablet device, the Redmi Note 2, launches in South Africa this week ? priced at R2 999.

Xiaomi launched in South Africa last year. The start-up from China aims to provide high-quality technology at affordable prices.

The new device comes with a 2GHz MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core chipset, originally designed to power high-end flagship phones.

According to BMI-TechKnowledge's 2015 SA Consumer Digital Lifestyle Research Programme, many smartphone users would consider a phablet for their next handset if price were not an issue.

"At R2 999, we are bringing the 5.5-inch form factor within reach of the majority of smartphone users in the country," says RJ van Spaandonk, president of Mobile in Africa (MIA), the official distributor for Xiaomi in SA.

"Many comparable smartphones sell at double the price, and none of them retail below R4 000."

Redmi Note 2 can be ordered online immediately from Takealot and MIA Africa, and will go on sale at Dion Wired, Game, Incredible Connection and Makro next week.
