What makes Locky so disastrous is that it is able to encrypt most file formats and encrypts all files it can access replacing the content with .locky extension. The victim is then prompted via a file called "_locky_recover_instructions.txt" to pay the ransom. Ransom demands range between 0.5 Bitcoin to 2 Bitcoin which is equivalent to around R 3 336 – R 13 341.
In light of this new threat, what can you do to keep your network safe? Basic preventative measures include:
* Do not open unsolicited e-mail attachments;
* Backup your data off site; and
* Do not enable Macros.
However, these traditional approaches and conventional AV are no longer enough to protect users against cyber criminals who are constantly creating new ransomware. Panda Security has recognised the need to develop security solutions that address a changing cyber threat landscape and can now bring you a real solution to mitigate the threat of Ransomware, Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) and Zero-Day attacks.
Panda's Adaptive Defense 360 is the first and only offering to combine Endpoint Protection (EPP) and Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) capabilities into a single solution, actively classifying every running application in your organisation and only allowing legitimate programs to run. Adaptive Defense works by continuously analysing programs running on your network and automatically classifying them as either goodware or malware, and only allowing goodware to run. Adaptive Defense is a managed service, technical experts will investigate applications that aren't analysed automatically. Adaptive Defense detects and blocks new generation threats in real time without relying on signature files.
Panda Security is the world's leading provider of cloud-based security solutions, the first IT security company to harness the power of cloud computing with its Collective Intelligence technology. Automatically analysing and classifying thousands of new malware samples every day. This guarantees corporate customers and home users the most effective protection against Internet threats with minimum impact on system performance. In 2006, Jeremy Matthews founded Panda's local subsidiary in Cape Town, opening the international vendor's first presence on the African continent.
