Western Cape residents will receive 250MB of free WiFi per month.

The Western Cape government, in partnership with Neotel, has launched the first phase of a WiFi rollout project to every ward across the province.

According to provincial officials, the project will see all parts of the province, including metros and rural areas, have access to free WiFi.

This is the most comprehensive WiFi rollout project championed by a provincial government in SA, says the province.

Neotel says users will receive 250MB of free WiFi per month, per user/device; thereafter payment kicks in. The Western Cape WiFi project will be used as a blueprint of how other provinces should operate, says Neotel.

In January, the City of Cape Town also announced plans to expand its free Internet network by adding 30 more WiFi zones. The city plans to add 60 more zones in the following financial year to June 2017.

According to the city, since the introduction of free WiFi to the public, a total of 420 000 unique users have utilised the service.

Government has set targets in line with the National Development Plan, to modernise the economy through the provision of ubiquitous broadband access to all South Africans by 2020 at speeds of 10Mbps, scalable to 100Mbps by the year 2030, especially those living in the most rural of areas.
