Cell C has switched on LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.

Cell C says the next generation broadband technology is the next major step in the evolution of its LTE network. LTE-A will bring faster services, better coverage and greater stability according to Cell C, which is aiming to cater for fast growing demand in data services and content delivery in South Africa.

The telco's LTE-A footprint overlaps its current LTE footprint, meaning Cell C customers that have LTE-A capable devices in LTE areas will experience the speed of LTE-A.

LTE-A is only currently available on what Cell C classifies as 'Category six handsets'. These include the Samsung Note 5, Samsung S6 Edge, Apple iPhone 6S, Apple iPhone 6S Plus, Huawei Mate 8_DS, Samsung S7 Flat, Samsung S7 Edge and LG G5.

Cell C says that customers using these devices will still see a 4G or LTE symbol on their handsets, however, they can expect to see data download speeds of up to 100Mbps.

KwaZulu-Natal can expect the rollout of LTE-A in the coming months and the technology will go live in KZN by the third quarter of this year. Cell C says that more handsets and stand-alone data devices will also become available in due course.
