Beyond speed - optimising Oracle database performance to support business growth

The next-generation database needs to deliver consistency in application performance and data protection, says Stefan Voss, director of Technical Marketing - EMC Core Technology Division.

Johannesburg, 28 Apr 2016

The world is looking to all-flash arrays for speed and performance, but the story should not end there. The next-generation database also needs to deliver consistency in application performance, data protection and more, says EMC.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming EMC Infrastructure as a Superpower Executive Forum, to be staged in Johannesburg in partnership with ITWeb, Stefan Voss, Director, Technical Marketing - EMC Core Technology Division, said performance management and user experience were among the top-of-mind issues among database administrators around the world.

"Performance management is sometimes complex and time-consuming, and the problem is only going to get more pronounced as data volumes grow and users become more demanding." Bottlenecks may be seen as a common DBA enemy, he says, but the problem is not just the fact that a bottleneck exists, but also how to pinpoint exactly where it is.

"Just keeping the lights on may be one headache, but DBAs also face the challenges of availability and data protection. Around the world, when we speak to DBAs at Oracle-focused events, we see a great deal of interest in our ability to support troubleshooting and ensure immediate restoration of the database and protection of the data itself," he says.

"DBAs are confronted with the question, 'if I have an outage, how can I quickly dial back to the trusted state?' Another challenge is the protection of the data itself - we have ways to do this very efficiently, so that they can avoid corruption and always have a copy of that last resort.

"For DBAs, it's about a lot more than speed - it's about ensuring performance that is always consistent and predictable," Voss says.

EMC experts will travel to South Africa next month to highlight EMC's primary storage portfolio, which provides industry-leading flash solutions, including XtremIO, VMAX All Flash, and soon to be announced mid-range systems. These systems are designed to deliver consistent low response times to ensure a smooth service delivery. Using embedded copy technologies allows IT teams to provision many copies of the DB instance instantaneously while consuming little to no space and delivering continued low response times. EMC's availability and data protection continuum allows DBAs to customise their availability strategy to desired recovery times and recovery point. Combined, EMC's portfolio delivers the ingredients for better SLAs, a more available and protected environment, and massive consolidation.
