There is a lack of understanding of the role of IP-based security solutions in the market, says IPVS's Marnix de Lorm.

IP Video Solutions (IPVS), a security systems distributor and integrator in South Africa, has signed a distribution agreement with Genetec, a provider of open-platform, unified IP security solutions.

As part of the agreement, IPVS will distribute the Genetec portfolio of software and hardware, and network security appliances throughout Southern Africa.

The two companies will focus on creating brand awareness of Genetec and IPVS and increase their market share across Southern Africa, says Marnix de Lorm, director at IPVS.

The total video surveillance market is expected to reach $71.28 billion by 2022, at an estimated compound annual growth rate of 16.56% between 2016 and 2022, says Markets and Markets.

"The region is key to success across the African continent and we look forward to building a significant presence for IPVS and Genetec. Southern African based businesses will now have access to the Genetec portfolio of software and hardware, and network security appliances."

According to Ted Ghali, vice president and MD sales EMEA at Genetec, the African region represents a significant emerging market for unified, open-architecture IP security solutions.

"Genetec is pleased to add IPVS to our list of authorised distributors. With the market knowledge and extensive customer base of IPVS, we are confident that we will be able to continue to broaden our market reach in Southern Africa."

De Lorm says there is a great opportunity for IPVS to increase its channel of certified Genetec resellers in Southern Africa, adding IPVS is excited to expand its network of certified integrators and resellers.

'We see great value in offering more choice and playing a pivotal role in introducing the Genetec brand of open-platform solutions to the local market."

However, he says there is a lack of understanding the role of IP-based security solutions in the market and how to select the right mix of camera technologies to meet the overall business goal.

Today's challenges are centred on the modern video management system and how it has evolved substantially from its start as a simple surveillance system, he adds.

It initially offered video data recording and playback, and now goes far beyond simplistic control of cameras and videos, emerging more as a security platform that caters for a range of additional security features, explains De Lorm.

Companies need to look at creating a system or solution and not just at a technology in isolation, he adds.
