South African contact centre solutions provider, Ocular Technologies, recently gave its clients and other corporates an opportunity to witness first-hand the significant impact its sponsored learning programme has had on learners at Realogile Secondary School, in Alexandra.

In partnership with training company, Nothando Training, and its Whole Brain Learning programme, Ocular Technologies has supported students in coming to grips with practical learning methods since 2011.

"We wanted to show other role-players in the private industry the difference corporates can make in educating our country's youth. By showing the learning methods in a practical way, I believe we achieved our goal," says Pommie Lutchman, CEO at Ocular Technologies.

The main objective of the programme is to increase the matric pass rate of learners, in order to ensure a viable future for the learners and alleviate the resultant socio-economic effects that school dropouts have on the country.

"On the day of our visit it was inspiring to see how confident the learners had become after obtaining the right tools to help them learn, understand and retain information," adds Lutchman.

"Kamal Khusal, director and master trainer at Nothando Training, led the class and was very vibrant and engaging with the learners, as it is the intention of the programme. Motivation and inspiration was at the core of the session and it was powerful to see the behaviour shift from the beginning of the course to the end of the course."

After five years of sponsoring the Realogile study programme, Ocular Technologies will now closely follow the 2016 grade 11 class. Confident with the outcomes of the programme, the company has thrown down the gauntlet to other businesses in the private sector to also adopt a school and sponsor the programme.

"Our commitment to Realogile is long-term. We are excited to see the contributions today's learners will make to tomorrow's marketplace and hope other corporates do the same," says Lutchman.
