On the 20th of May, 2016 at the Google I/O conference in California, Google and Sage unveiled a software prototype that will allow customers to create, update and manage Google Sheets reports taken directly from Sage One Accounting, all through Sage Intelligence Reporting Cloud.
This latest project in a two-year partnership with Google sees Sage leveraging the latest Google innovation - Google API development for Google Sheets. Charles Teversham, MD of Sage Intelligence, explains that, "This innovation opens up a world of opportunity for financial software users, by taking data from Sage products and exporting it straight into Google Sheets to create a dynamically updated spreadsheet complete with charts and analysis - all with a single click!" To compete in today's market conditions, small and medium businesses need to have the ability to access critical information in seconds, rather than the hours or even days that this used to take, and this proof of concept delivers on this.
Sage Intelligence software has always allowed financial professionals to use the familiar environment of Microsoft Excel to run, customise and analyse reports. So why choose to partner their product with Google Sheets? "In one of our recent and innovative developer days (where the developers get together to share creative ideas), we came up with a prototype to integrate Sage Intelligence Reporting Cloud with Google Sheets," says Jeff Ryan, Product Manager at Sage Intelligence. This prototype was shown to the Sage One product team whose research revealed that a large number of Sage One customers use Gmail, Google Drive, and as a result, Google Sheets. "Google Sheets has become that 'familiar environment' for many entrepreneurs and start-ups, and so it just made sense to take it further from there," explains Ryan.
So started a collaborative effort between Sage and Google to get a feasible, real-life scenario ready for the Google I/O 2016 conference and beyond. Developers from Sage Intelligence in Durban, South Africa, collaborated with colleagues from Sage One in the United Kingdom and Google in North America, taking it from idea to proof of concept in less than two months. "Now that the concept has been proven and presented, where we go from here is unlimited," says Teversham, who concludes: "The plan is to release software to our Sage customers as a rich integration with Google Sheets in the near future. Sage customers will have the freedom to access and analyse critical business information wherever they have access to a Web browser or a smart phone, enabling them to make better business decisions, faster."
