Extravagantly-filtered selfies do not seem to be a passing fad. Another app, called Egg, was launched this week by Japanese messaging company Line.

Egg allows users to put filters, such as a flower crown or animal mask, on video selfies. Other apps that offer similar features include Snapchat and Facebook-owned MSQRD.

Unlike Snapchat, Egg is not a social media platform. Users will create their altered selfie within the app, save it, and then share it to another platform such as Facebook or Twitter.

Egg also offers over 50 filters that users can access at any point. Snapchat offers a limited selection of filters that get rotated daily.

The Google Play Store touts the filters as: "Real 3D masks with special blending effects that meld smoothly with the user's face."

Users also have the option to create their own mask with images on their smartphone.

In March, Facebook purchased Masquerade Technologies, the creator of the popular face-swapping app MSQRD, as part of its efforts to build its video services.

Egg also allows users to perform the 'face-swap' with more than two people in the photo.

The app is available for free download from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Line is a popular messaging app in Asia and growing in popularity in Europe and America. Launched in 2011, the company recently announced it had more than 500 million downloads in the Google Play Store and claims to have more than 700 million active users.

In comparison, Facebook Messenger said earlier this year is had 900 million users and WhatsApp over a billion.

Earlier this year, Line launched an app called Foodie that helps users take better pictures of their food.
