The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has confirmed that one of its office blocks at the head office in Sandton (Block A) was damaged by fire this afternoon.

The Block houses the licensing, policy, research and analysis, the regions divisions as well as the Gauteng Regional office. Investigations are continuing to determine the cause thereof.

In a statement the regulator says it "takes the well-being of its employees seriously and ensured that all those who were affected are taken to hospital for observation".

Icasa says the extent of the damage to the building cannot be confirmed until the investigation has been completed. However, Icasa assures all its stakeholders that it has prioritised the matter and everything will be back to normal as soon as possible.

"Icasa would like to thank the emergency services for a speedy response in extinguishing the fire before it got out of control.

"It is furthermore important to mention that all other Blocks and Divisions within ICASA are fully operational to provide a service to the South African public."
