#YouthMonth is almost over: why does that make a difference?

Johannesburg, 21 Jun 2016

Since it is nearing the end of yet another themed month celebrating another group of people, we beg the question: why is it important to celebrate young people? Are young people only important in June?

The long and the short of it is that the youth have, especially in South Africa, played an integral part in the changes, growth and successes seen every day within the world. Youth Day particularly celebrates the brave and unwavering commitment to change that was held by the Youth in the Soweto Uprising in 1976.

This history gives us a perfect example of why the youth of today are so important. Their contributions to the world will only grow as they do. More young people are going to school than ever before. More of these kids will go on to access more tertiary education, where they will have access to invaluable information resources like Sabinet, a proudly South African leader in information services across several industries.

Out of the approximately 54 million South Africans who took part in the 2014 census, over 31 million of them were under the age of 30, while over 20 million of them were under the age of 20. That is more than a third of the population, and the population continues to grow.

In line with their vision to bring the world's information to Africa, and Africa's information to the world, Sabinet supports students with curated information pertinent to their academic pursuits. These 20 million young minds will be the guardians and leaders of information from all corners of this over connected globe as they grow, enter, and ultimately change the workplace, as we know it.

As misinformation is promulgated through social media, online opinion pieces, blatant propaganda, poorly sourced articles, unfounded research and experimental studies, it is more important than ever to be sure that the information you use - to form your educational understanding - is certified as accurate, useful, and in context of its publication. Sabinet invites you to be a #FutureLeader, and a guardian of success even if youth month is over for now.
