LSD, Couchbase partner

Johannesburg, 29 Jun 2016

Dynamic open source consulting firm, LSD Information Technology, has partnered with Couchbase, a software company that develops and provides commercial packages and support for Couchbase Server. Couchbase Server, originally known as Membase, is an open-source, distributed NoSQL document-oriented database that is optimised for interactive applications.

The Couchbase platform includes Couchbase Server, Couchbase Lite - the first mobile NoSQL database, and Couchbase Sync Gateway.

"Our partnership with LSD Information Technology in South Africa comes at a pivotal moment in the global adoption of NoSQL to support the high performance and data intensive needs of the Digital Economy," said Bob Wiederhold, CEO Couchbase.

Sven Lesicnik, MD of LSD, explains that LSD prides itself on offering a wide array of open source vendor-neutral solutions, and that the addition of the Couchbase solution stack is another way the company aims to provide the best and most technologically-advanced model for collaboration and working.

"Couchbase is the undoubted performance and scalability leader among NoSQL vendors," Lesicnik says. "The company has forged a strong reputation among the Fortune 500 in the highly competitive database market."

He says developers around the world build enterprise Web, mobile, and Internet of things (IOT) applications on the Couchbase data management platform to support huge volumes of data in real time. As South African businesses are increasingly looking to open source solutions to meet their development needs, the Couchbase community locally will grow.

"Couchbase has simplified the way for developers to build enterprise applications on NoSQL using N1QL, a declarative query language that extends SQL for JSON. It also allows companies to operate at any scale, with elastic scalability and configurable cross data centre replication to boost data locality and availability."

He adds that with its benefits of lower TCO, the ability to shift developers from low-value to high-value work, and modern development practices, open source is increasingly forming the foundation of the future. "Open source isn't a fad. It is the base on which some of the world's biggest technology companies around the world are built, including Google. The addition of Couchbase to our extensive portfolio will provide another world-class tool to our customers who are already building their future through open source."
