Over 10 500 ZAdotCity domains have been registered in SA so far. This is according to the ZA Central Registry (ZACR), which has provided the latest statistics for registered geographic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) for the cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

Over 4 500 gTLDs have been registered for .capetown (dotCapeTown), 3 500 for .joburg (dotJoburg) and 2 500 for .durban (dotDurban).

"The Internet presence of our three leading cities is rapidly becoming a South African online success story," according to ZACR CEO Lucky Masilela.

The three city domains have been available for public registration since July 2014 but are nowhere near as popular as the .co.za domain, which reached the one million mark for registered domain names in August last year.

"There is sustained local and overseas interest in the major cities that make the continent's most diversified economic hub. As the economy continues to gather steam for a predicted better economic performance in 2017, we're confident ZAdotCities registrations will experience continued growth," Masilela says.

ZACR believes the dotCapeTown, dotJoburg and dotDurban domain names appeal to national pride, help boost search engine optimisation rankings and enable both individual and organisational brands to stand out from the Internet clutter.

"Every leading city in the world is well on its way to establishing their own unique destination on the Web and these latest registration numbers prove South African cities will not be left behind," concludes Masilela.
