ICT Infrastructure provider, Vox Telecom, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Ruckus Wireless, to provide its customers across business and consumer segments with an integrated WiFi solution offering for existing and new market requirements.

According to Vox Telecom, the partnership will see the company standardising its WiFi offering on Ruckus Wireless to provide the infrastructure provider with a convenient and integrated product set to both consumers and businesses across SA.

The service offerings include an extensive product range of solutions which consist of the full range of Ruckus Wireless indoor and outdoor access points; the Ruckus vSPoT virtualised instance smart positioning; the Ruckus Virtual SmartZone software platform; the WiFi service management platform, and more, says Ruckus Wireless.

Dederick Venter, executive head of outsourced technology at Vox Telecom, says this joint venture comes at a time when the demand for fibre to publicly available WiFi networks is increasing in SA.

"As we are rapidly expanding our services offering into both fibre-to-the-business and to-the-home, we were faced with new WiFi connectivity requirements from our customers and needed a WiFi player that was not only a technology leader, but had an extensive product range to meet our exacting demands from home users right up to enterprise. We believe we have found that with Ruckus Wireless," he explains.

Riaan Graham, sales director for Ruckus Wireless Sub-Saharan Africa, says while fibre provides a foundation for connectivity, it is WiFi that will accelerate digital citizenry in the months and years to come.

"Given the reliance on mobile access to data, businesses and consumers are looking for always-on connectivity. WiFi provides this cost-effectively, but it has to be flexible enough for service providers to customise it according to the demands of the market.

"Video streaming, home automation and the Internet of things are growing locally and consumers are demanding a richer experience to take advantage of these value-added services, as well as services that were traditionally not available," he points out.

One challenge facing the fibre industry, he adds, is getting the fibre on the ground and getting it into the customer site, the turnaround times are too long.

"Currently fibre to the home is still perceived as an expensive solution, but it's about demand, the more the demand and the wider your network, the quicker you can service customers, and in turn, the more cost-effective fibre will become . Becoming the WiFi provider of choice for a leading telecoms operator like Vox Telecom is testament to the product and service capabilities of Ruckus Wireless technology," adds Graham.

As a symbol of their commitment to a South African cause, Vox and Ruckus Wireless say they have also pledged to sponsor an anti-poaching dog. The sponsored dog will undergo intensive training before being deployed into one of the park programmes driven by the anti-poaching K9 unit.
