The Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) donated a computer lab to the Tsolo Special School in the Eastern Cape.

Tsolo Special School caters for learners with disabilities between the ages of eight- and 18-years-old.

The school's new computer lab is equipped with 40 tablets, three laptops, a printer, smart board, a projector, as well as Internet connectivity. It will also receive maintenance for 24 months.

According to Lumko Mtimde, USAASA CEO, donating the computer lab is in line with the agency's school connectivity programme in rural areas, which forms part of government's Operation Phakisa initiative.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mtimde said the facility will connect the school to global education opportunities, and empower learners with skills needed for the inclusive information and knowledge society.

"The school is now empowered to participate in the promotion of innovation and creativity; the learners are not just consumers of content but producers as well as manufacturers."

Mtimde added: "We will come back to Mhlontlo and King Sebata Dalindyebo municipalities to upgrade this connectivity through our integrated broadband plan in this financial year. We thank our partnership with the school and Eastern Cape Department of Education. This is part of our contribution to the SA Connect strategy led by our minister, Dr Siyabonga Cwele."
