FordVR will release new virtual reality content each month.

Ford will let its customers experience what it feels like to handle a supercar with its new virtual reality (VR) app, FordVR.

The supercar experience will be the first content available when the app is downloaded, and there will be different stories and experiences each month.

The first piece is the story behind the Ford GT's return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world's oldest active sports car races in endurance racing.

To develop the app, Ford partnered with Tool of North America, which specialises in VR and 360-degree content and mobile app creation.

Content can be viewed even if the user does not own a VR headset.

The next story will debut in September, featuring Hoonigan Racing's Ken Block and Ford Focus RS RX.

The platform will go beyond showcasing Ford performance vehicles.

Lisa Schoder, Ford's digital marketing manager, says the company hopes the app will bring mobility issues to the forefront, by allowing customers to experience how to handle automated 'dangerous' situations.

The app is available for download on iOS and Android devices.
