Tutors from Stellenbosch University will provide maths and science tutorials and revision lessons via a virtual classroom to learners at a high school in Ekurhuleni.

Grade eight to 12 learners at Tsakane Secondary School will receive weekday tutorials to enhance their digital learning experience.

According to a statement, this is a collaborative project between the Department of Basic Education and the University of Stellenbosch, which aims to strengthen learner performance at schools in Ekurhuleni.

"The learning support system enables learners to ask questions and interact with the tutors in real-time through the video feedback system," the statement notes.

Today, deputy minister of public enterprises Bulelani Magwanise and communications deputy minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams will officially launch a telematics system at the school.

Gauteng Department of Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has applauded the installation of a telematics system, saying it complements the provincial department's digital classroom project.

The deputy ministers will also hand over technical equipment and machinery to the Mamellong Technical School. The equipment will include various technical workspaces, such as electrical and welding machines and a woodwork station where learners will be taught furniture manufacturing skills.

The handover of the machinery is to ensure Mamellong becomes a real technical school, with workshops to train learners in the different technical and mechanical engineering fields, says the statement.
