The solution enables companies to become 'cloud-portable' - eliminating any lock-in, says First Technology National.

First Technology National has unveiled a data backup and archiving as-a-service solution, powered by Commvault and FirstNet Technology Services.

Available as an on-premises or hybrid cloud, the solution enables companies to move from capital-intensive models that require outright investment in technology, to a more flexible, operational expenditure-based consumption model, says First Technology National.

The solution helps South African organisations capitalise on the transformational advantages of moving one's data to FirstNet's local Public cloud, it adds.

Tommy Ferreira, technical architect lead at First Technology National, says the solution can also broker to other cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services.

Organisations can view their backup and archive reports and completion statuses via their own portal, providing them with visibility and control, says First Technology National.

They can choose whether to manage their own backups or request a fully managed service from First Technology National, it adds.

"We've pulled together the local expertise from First Technology National, with Commvault's data management software, and FirstNet's infrastructure assets - to create a strong, feature-rich solution," says Ferreira.

The solution ensures workloads are optimised, complexities and costs of cloud migration are mitigated, and the post-migration operations are managed effectively and securely, he explains.

Ferreira says the release of data backup and archiving-as-a-service is critical in today's technology world.

As organisations continue to generate exponentially more data each year, having a flexible and scalable data management solution is becoming a key priority of CIOs in every company, he asserts.

More organisations are looking at alternative service models as cloud becomes more readily available and cost-effective in SA, notes Ferreira.

"This type of platform is flexible, cost-effective and efficient. It also underpins digital transformation and transitions customers to the cloud in a vendor agnostic manner."

Johan Scheepers, systems engineering director at Commvault for the Middle East, SA and Turkey, says the solution enables companies to become "cloud-portable" - eliminating any lock-in and gaining the freedom to move one's data to the virtualisation platform of their choice.

It is based on a flexible pay-as-you-go model that ensures clients pay only for the data management services they actually need, he adds.

"Our partnership with FirstNet - which operates a tier-three data centre - allows us to accommodate clients who want to maintain their data locally. This ensures compliance with The Protection of Personal Information Act, and one's security, compliance and governance requirements," says Ferreira.

He says the offering is already in the market with 'live' customers using the service. "We anticipate that the uptake will be impressive as it delivers two distinct benefits - enhanced efficiencies and cost savings. These are compelling reasons to avail of the service."
