MTN SA has appointed Enzo Scarcella as its new chief operating officer. He will join the company on 1 December.

Before he agreed to assume the COO role at MTN SA, Scarcella was chief marketing officer at Telkom, a designation he has filled since November 2013. Prior to that, he was managing executive of marketing at Vodacom.

According to MTN, Scarcella has extensive brand and marketing experience, and has worked in the broadcasting, retail and fast-moving goods industries.

Scarcella served as brand manager for South African Breweries and Guinness in the UK, and worked at Edcon as strategy and marketing executive. He was also marketing executive at MNet.

He previously spent five years in the US, where he completed his education, graduating with a BA Hons from Harvard University. He also has a diploma in marketing from the Kellogg School of Business in Chicago.

"As we strive to achieve our strategic objectives of driving business growth, transforming customer experience and overhauling employee engagement, it is important that we have the right individuals in place that will help us increase our market share in non-voice services and strengthen our foothold in adjacent sectors, " says Mteto Nyati, MTN SA CEO.

In an e-mail to ITWeb, Telkom spokesperson Jacqui O'Sullivan says Scarcella, after almost three years at Telkom, decided to leave Telkom to pursue a new career opportunity.

She notes when Scarcella joined Telkom in 2014, the telco's brand awareness and affinity were at a low point.

However, "Scarcella drove a brand strategy with focus and creativity, delivering the updated Telkom brand and a succession of highly successful campaigns across our businesses. We wish him all the best as he embarks on the next stage of his career."

Telkom did not give any indication of who will be Scarcella's successor.

MTN recently made some changes in its executive portfolio amid troubles over a $5.2 billion (R73.6 billion) fine in Nigeria.

In June, it announced the appointment of Rob Shuter as its new group president and CEO after Sifiso Dabengwa resigned.

In July, MTN named Kholekile Ndamase as the new deputy head of mergers and acquisitions for the group. Ndamase will join MTN on 10 September from Rand Merchant Bank.

The MTN SA board also added Mike Harper, Lerato Phalatse, Mike Bosman and Trudy Makhaya as of 1 July.
