North West premier Supra Mahumapelo has joined the list of South African government officials to visit China to explore business and trade opportunities.

North West premier Supra Mahumapelo is visiting China to lead discussions on proposed deals for the construction of buildings and improving ICT infrastructure in the South African province.

China has become a favourite destination for SA's government officials, with many noting business interests and increasing trade and investment opportunities as reasons for their visits to the Asian country.

For the 2014/2015 financial year, as many as 11 government departments, including ministers and deputy ministers, travelled to China, according to Parliamentary responses.

Mahumapelo will explore further investment opportunities and confirm the provincial government's commitment to various proposed deals, according to his office.

The office says: "The second official trip to China is part of strengthening the existing trade and investment relations with BRICS countries and to serve as a great platform for the province to learn best practices in dealing with housing challenges and ICT issues, among others."

As part of the one week programme, the premier and his delegation will attend a Huawei exhibition in Shanghai before meeting with various other companies, says the statement.

Issues to be discussed include the establishment of a bus manufacturing plant in the North West, as well as the establishment of donkey breeding farms for the export of donkey hide and meat to China.

The premier is accompanied by MEC for rural, environment and agricultural development Manketsi Tlhape, MEC for finance, economy and enterprise development Wendy Nelson and experts in the field of agriculture.

MEC for education and sport development Sello Lehari will act as premier for the duration of Mahumapelo's visit to China.
