Hybrid data centre sprawl drives IT costs up

The growing adoption of cloud within a hybrid model is adding complexity and cost to the management of data centres and infrastructures in South Africa - a challenge Dimension Data and EMC have moved to address, says Dimension Data.

Cloud is going mainstream and South African organisations are typically edging their way into this environment in a phased approach, adopting hybrid models to fast-track the journey.

Stuart Fox, Group Senior Director, Business Development, Data Centre at Dimension Data, says: "With the proliferation of applications over a multitude of platforms, demand for high availability and mounting volumes of data, client's data centres are no longer confined to on-premises. They are evolving to interconnected hybrid operating models to provide the table stakes/benefits of flexibility, scalability, security, and business continuity. But to gain advantage of a hybrid cloud environment and support a broad base of day-to-day applications, these environments must be able to operate seamlessly together without losing visibility, governance, or operational control."

Dimension Data is discovering in its client engagements that internal IT teams are increasingly challenged to manage complex, heterogeneous infrastructures and hybrid IT environments. "It is becoming increasingly common to find IT struggling with an ageing infrastructure that doesn't support new applications, paying for storage space they are not using, and lacking the skill set needed to manage a hybrid IT environment and new technologies."

"Management challenges lead to escalating costs caused by inefficiencies and not realising value out of their technology investments and too much time spent running day-to-day operations rather than focusing on strategic initiatives," Fox says.

To overcome these challenges, Dimension Data's managed services is designed to enable rapid time-to-value and a flexible consumption model of EMC storage and converged infrastructure for clients, with secure, end-to-end infrastructure management and process automation across the network, server, and storage for on-premises and cloud environments, says Fox.

"This helps clients transition to hybrid IT with technology innovation, industry leading features, management capabilities and expertise," says Fox.

He believes that, with minimal capital outlay and rapid time-to-value, Dimension Data's managed services allow for accelerated process management and automation in complex technology environments, provides access to specialised skills and resources, and facilitates seamless transition to new technologies.

"Dimension Data's end-to-end management capabilities surrounding the EMC technology provide a cost-effective alternative to building or buying a 'do-it-yourself' model," says Fox.

"Through our partnership, we are increasing the speed of adoption of hybrid cloud as a platform for transformation for our clients. Dimension Data and EMC are delivering comprehensive solutions that span private cloud on or off premises, public and hybrid cloud, including advanced managed services for storage to our clients. These solutions feature flexible consumption based pricing models on storage, cloud and managed services."

With Dimension Data delivering services through its integrated service delivery model distributed around the globe, Fox says its proactive monitoring and management complemented by local expertise provides a consistent level of client support and client experience worldwide.

"Dimension Data's managed services for hybrid IT simplifies management of complex environments and leverages the group's end-to-end capabilities in consulting, cloud, data centre, security and networking; plus capabilities from the broader NTT Group," he concludes.
